Dear Prim specialists and fans,

I have heard that Elton does not supply spare parts for the repair and renovation of vintage Prim and that they prefer to do the work themselves, is that correct?

Does anyone have a complete price list for this type of work in Czech and in Czech Crowns, and then as an exercise to help my pathetic Czech language skills I will translate it!

Diky moc in advance !

Dear Micky, I doubt very much that you will get your hands on such a list. Concerning custom work PRIM can be quite mysterious, even asking their customers not to reveal the price. Anyway I wish you luck with this enterprise, it is nice to see that PRIM is not completely isolated from the outer world.

Hello Mickey,

The problem of vintage Prim watches renovation is rather complex. Elton, as you said, does not supply the parts. In my opinion, there are two main classes of renovation.

1. For very popular watches like Prim Sport Igen (1st generation) and 2nd generation (barrel-shaped case), Elton manufactures new stainless steel cases in larger series, which causes "very friendly" final price of restoration. The prices ranges from about 3000 - 4000 CZK (or may be little mor) for Sport 2 to some 11000 CZK for restoration of Igen watch. But estimating the price is rather tricky, while every restoration must be handled individually. The most favourite model for restoration here at the forum, is Igen. And, as I know, the price can start at some 7000 CZK, if the the movement is well and do not need to remove some parts. The most common task is to change the case for the steel one, change the hands and to reprint the dial. The movement is also cleaned and tunned. The final price may or may not exceed 10000 CZK. It changes from piece to piece. The price for Prim Sport 2 is significantly lower.

My opinion is, that for about 10000 CZK you get a great watch (restored Igen) with elegance and decent sporty look.

2. Prim had made many tens or maybe hundreads of various models of watches, This means, that it is impossible to provide the same restoration services for such low prices like for Sport models for every watch. I think (I do not know), that it is possible to arrange a restoration of almost every watch, but the result will be a solitaire with very very high price. Imagine, what must be the price, if Elton would manufacture only one piece of desired watch case, one piece of the dial... You can also specify the material (steel, gold, whatever), but this can be taken into consideration, if the watch has high personal value for you and you can pay several tens or hundreads of thousands of CZK.

The alternative procedure (with very low costs) is to buy another watches of the same type for parts (case, dial, hands, movement) and put them together to make one nice piece. Some watchmakers in the czech republic also have some old parts for Prim watches. This is the very easy way, how to make your vintage watch fresh again. The only disadvantage is, that the cases are made of chrome-plated brass (only military Orlik had steel case), or gold-plated brass. This determines the limited lifetime of the case, especially if the watch is beeing worn regularly (for collection watch it does not matter). In my opinion is, that this way it is possible to restore the most of vintage Prim production.
