From brand to brand and even from inside the same brand you will get conflicting advice on what you can do with a watch at the same WR rating. For instance if you read the little instruction book that comes with your Oris watch you could be led to believe that you could actually take a watch with a 30 m rating all the way down to a depth of 30 meters. This is not the case. Not by a long shot. The Oris General Catalogue ( given only to retailers ) states that activities for the different levels of water resistance are as follows. 30 m Wash hands only. 50 m Wash hands only. 100m Wash hands , shower , bath , swim on surface only. 300m includes all of above plus diving , this of course includes watches with 1000 and 2000 meter ratings. This means do not swim in any watch resembling a dress watch or motor racing sport watch. Some Q and A that may be of help. Q. My watch is labeled water resistant to 50 meters but the manufacturer says that I can not wear it swimming . Why is that ? A. The different levels of water resistance as expressed in meters are only theoretical. They refer to the depth at which a watch will keep water out if both watch and the water are perfectly motionless. In real life , the movement of the wearers arm through the water increases the pressure on the watch dramatically; so it can't be worn to the depths indicated by lab testing machines. Q. Is water resistance permanent ? A. No. Water resistance depends on several factors, some of which can be affected by wear or simply by time. Gaskets can become corroded or misshapen , watch crystals can become loose or cracked so get your WR tested at least once a year. Q. How is water resistance tested ? A. There are basically two ways of testing for water resistance , referred to as " Dry" and " Wet" testing. In the former , the watch is subjected to air pressure and measurements are taken to see weather the case expands as a result of air leaking into the case. If it does then the watch is not water resistant. In one type of wet testing the watch is first subjected to air pressure then submerged in water. if air bubbles are seen escaping from the case then it is not water resistant. Q. Can I wear my watch in the hot tub ? A. No . Exposing your watch to heat , weather it's in a hot tub or sauner can cause the gaskets to loose their shape and their ability to keep water out. Q. Besides extreme heat what else can jeopardize my watches ability to keep water out? A. Some chemicals can corrode the gasket. Heavily chlorinated water can cause problems , as can hair spray and spray on perfumes , they can work their way into the watches seams and damage the gaskets. I hope this information helps you keep your new friend in perfect running order. Remember always err on the side of caution and if you want a watch to go swimming in , buy a dive watch. Cheers Warren
