Chens History

      Constant-Chens-Naeff(1544-1622),whose original name was Constant-Naeff,was a Swiss adventurer and scholar born in an old-line family in Altstatten City of St.Gallen at the Rhine region in the northeast of Switzerland.In 1572,he joined the society of Jesus amd made acquaintance with Matteo Ricci.They came to do missionary work and lived in China together in the Ming Wanli period.In 1589,the newly appointed general governor of Guangdong province expelled missionaries from his governed land.Fortunately,Naeff who was doing the missionary work outside.At that time,he got the help from the Chen's family,but the only son of the family died unfortunately.Constant-Naeff added "chens" as his Chinese family name from then on and renamed Constant-Chens-Naeff in the memory of the Chen's family.

      In 1603,Constant-Chens-Naeff left China and went to Geneva.He bulit a manual watch workshop to make watches for nobles.In 1608,all his business was moved to his hometown and was dedicated to watch customization for the nobles.In oder to present unique features of his watches,all watches made personally by him were engraved with his Chinese family name ?chens?on the back.In 1622,Naeff passed away and his business was passed down to his eldest son Angus-Naeff.Watch making then became a family business.

       Naeff's descendents were divided into two branches.One branch maintained fine watch customization for the nobles while the other branch transformed to the small-scale production of watches which were mainly sold to the common people.In 1965,the smart Japanese invented quartz watch which had two decisive advantages:extremely cheap and accurate compared to mechanical watch.The impact from Japanese watches was a catastrophe and made the whole Swiss watch industry competely defeated.Up to the early 1980s,only a population of more than 15,000 remained working in the whole Swiss watch industry.The Naeff family members scattered over Switzerland to involve in processing and production for some well-known brands.

      Until 2005,the Naeff family held a family meeting in the hometown.The final decision was made to reform the family business and to recombine all scattered business into the Chenswatch company which adopted ?Chens?as the unique symbol for the watches made by Constant -Chens-Naeff.The Naeff family would not forget the wish of their ancestor and introduced watched engraved with the Chinese family name ?Chens' to China,a miraculous country which had been remembered by the Naeff family for the past hundreds of years.
