To learn more about the hobby we all love and share, I spent 18 months working 10 hours a week at a jewelry store that had an in-house watchmaker doing repairs on all kinds of watches. We fixed high end watches and watches costing less than $100, and did a brisk trade replacing batteries in quartz watches.

One thing I learned is that the more you use something, the more you connect with it and love it, especially kids. Price point doesn’t have anything to do with the ability of a watch to generate sentimental value. What you might see as a cheap crappy watch of no significance might be somebody’s last tangible connection to a parent or grandparent or friend or child that’s no longer with us. It’d surprise many of you to know how often watchmakers hear people say, “I know it’s just a cheap old watch but I’ll pay whatever I have to to get it working again.” Sometimes a watch is more than just a watch.

We could find a way to service just about any watch…but not Swatch. The saddest part of our days would be finding a delicate way to explain to parents or grandparents with their nine-year-old in tow that their cherished Swatch wasn’t designed to be serviced or repaired, that it had reached the end of its lifespan and there was nothing we could do. Often trying to fix one was like trying to service a disposable BIC lighter.

So I’m hoping for $250 or more that the Moonswatch, unlike millions of its Swatch ancestors, can actually be serviced by your watchmaker in five or ten years, because otherwise, there’s going to be a lot of heartache for a lot of folks for whom spending a couple of hundred bucks on a watch is a big deal.

I haven’t seen the watch in question but if it’s anything like the Swatches I’m familiar with, I wouldn’t be buying one for my six-year-old, just in case he fell in love with it and it became his favorite thing in the world. It’d just be too sad in three or four years if he became super-attached to a watch that couldn’t be serviced.

No ale ja si to opravdu myslim.
A tam Vam nechutne marketingove tahy s umělou nedostupnosti zbozi a spol nevadi?

Já do toho vůbec nevidím, ale říkám si, jestli to není snaha zachránit swatch vyrábějící plastové hodinky v době, kdy všichni okolo kupují plastové chytré hodinky.
